OVERVIEW OF SECURITY SITUATION NEPAL
Over the last 7 years Nepal has been confronting a major challenge in bringing an end to the Maoist insurgency problem in the country which has claimed many lives. The insurgency started from the far western remote region of Nepal and has spread to many districts.
Within the last two years or so the insurgency has intensified and had a devastating effect on the tourism industry. Though there is no record of any physical attack on tourists or abductions in the far remote trekking areas we have confirmed cases of trekkers being forcefully taxed to provide donations through extortion without sparing trek guides and porters as well..
However travel advisories issued to warn travelers against traveling to Nepal are vague and give the impression to the reader that the every inch of the country is a high risk area for travelers. This is certainly not the case. While we do have a serious insurgency problem this is largely confined to rural areas. The highest risk is remote western districts. Urban areas such as the capital Kathmandu, Pokhara and towns like Bharatput in Chitwan, Biratnagar etc are very safe with provision of heavy security to prevent any unfortunate incidents.
For travelers interested in sightseeing, adventure tours such as jungle safaris, white water rafting, mountain biking should have no problems. On the other trekking is becoming increasingly more and more risky and this is one particular activity we admit is a high risk area. On the contrary we have been having a numerous individual trekkers and within the trekking areas so far the Annapurna and Everest region have been low risk areas though encounters with Maoist rebels cannot be ruled out. Even in the low risk areas we generally advise tourist not to trek individually on their own . Going through an organized trek with trek guide and porter is safer and they can always help trouble shoot in case of encounters.
Nepal as a transit destination for travel to Tibet, Bhutan and Sikkim is absolutely safe as travelers en route do not require to travel in remote rural areas and so can rest assured within urban comforts.
Please note that as your travel agent we are equally very much concerned about your personal safety and therefore any travelers booking with us are well advised in advance in case we suspect any problems so that a preventive remedy can be adopted to deal with foreseeable problems. By following our advice and suggestions you can still enjoy Nepal and rest assured about your personal safety. We are convinced that we are the best people to advise you on your program as to what's safe and what is not.
We make serious efforts to ensure the safety of our guests and operate tours and treks only to destinations considered very safe.
